Cllr Mary Locke expresses disappointment at Lidl planning application approval

As many of you will be aware, this week Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee voted in favour of plans to demolish Fitness First and build a new Lidl store on the site. This decision comes just a fortnight after the same committee had voted to reject the plan.

Although technically the site falls within Selly Oak Ward rather than Stirchley, Cllr Mary Locke strongly opposes the plan because of the negative impact it will have on residents and businesses locally. Commenting on the decision, Cllr Locke said:

“I am very disappointed by the Planning Committee’s decision to approve the demolition of the popular Fitness First gym in order to build a new Lidl supermarket, despite the objections of over 400 residents. The loss of the gym will negatively affect people’s health and the new supermarket could well result in traffic chaos on the Pershore Road.”
